Demographics

Los Angeles demography is very interesting, as it is a diverse culture with a range of languages, cultures and religions.  According to the American Community Survey half of the population in Los Angeles is Latino.

With the Latino community amounting to half of the Los Angeles community, only 59% of them were born in the USA. 0.9% is from Puerto Rico and 39.7% are foreigners.

There has been a large Mexican influence in the area since 1850 with it clearly being recorded in the 1910 census.  Only 40% of Los Angeles residents speak English as their first language, 43.6% are Spanish speaking and some of these residents can speak English as well.

With a total of 1,275,534 households it’s interesting to know that 61% are families with 30.9% having children over the age of eighteen.

Breaking down the Los Angeles population 39% are married, 6.9% are male owners and 15% are female owners.  38% are non-family households with only 8% of them being 65 years old or older.

Los Angeles has a lot of people over the age of twenty five amounting to 2,407,775.  Only 15.9% of the people are under the age of sixteen and 11% have finished 12th grade without a diploma.  21% have a high school diploma, 19% have bachelor degrees and 10% have professional degrees.

Bear in mind that one in six people are involved in the artistic industry whether they work on movie sets, are actors, actresses, musicians or dancers.

The average income per household is $48,610 and the average family household is $53,008 and non-family households are only $38,227.  It is no wonder that the poverty in households is common in the area.

15% of families struggle with poverty, 10% of married couples and 30% of female owners without husbands all struggle with poverty.

Working in Los Angeles is 65.8% labor force with 61.3% of the population employed and only 0.1% of them are in the armed forces.

There is also a large Asian American presence in Los Angeles along with Cambodians, Bulgarians and Hungarians.  There are a lot of Filipinos, Indians and Koreans.

This very diverse community can be seen with Chinatown, Korea town, Little Ethiopia and Little Tokyo within the boundaries of this largest city in California.

621,000 of the population are of Jewish decent, but the area is made up of people from 140 countries speaking over 224 languages.

When looking at Los Angeles demography, you need to bear in mind that although it was founded in 1781, it became part of Mexico in 1821 and when it became part of the USA in 1848 a lot of the Mexicans remained behind.  This is why there is such a strong Mexican influence in the area.

The first European settlers only arrived in 1542, almost 100 years after the Mexicans and with it’s beautiful location, beaches, sand and sun it’s no surprise that people are flocking to live in this gorgeous city from all over the world.

Hollywood is also a large attraction to many of the foreign residents who have moved to the area in the hope of finding stardom.  With so many languages in one area only 40% of the population can speak English fluently.  The balance of the residents can speak a little English, but it is not their mother tongue.

On average it takes Los Angeles residents twenty nine minutes to travel to work at one of the 1,407.037 companies operating in the area.  30.2% of these companies are owned by women.

Los Angeles is a total of 4,060,87 square miles with a total of 2,417,9 people per square mile.
